SPOTLIGHT: SERENDIPITI

Meet Serendipiti and tune into new single “Feather”

You describe your sound as “fizzy indie folk-pop bursting with ethereal charm.” What does that phrase mean to you, and how does it capture your identity as an artist?

I think it has a lot of words that I really love and am inspired by in it, words that capture the essence of what I want my music to feel, so it really anchors me in who i am. liiike I adore ethereality and I hope to make my music always feel magical and like it’s lifting you into another world, and ‘charm’ is like another word for magic but the softer warm element of it - the emotional intimacy. And then ‘fizzy’ captures the sparkling I try to weave all across my songs, both sonically and thematically. I’m always really intentional with finding ways to create that magical uplifting connected feeling with my songs as a artist and i feel like those words feels encapsulate it!

Your songs often find “light in the darkness.” How do you approach writing about vulnerability while still leaving room for hope and beauty?

Something that is so intrinsically part of who I am is the concept of dichotomy. I truly believe in the world there is as much light as there is darkness and vice versa, and I think you can’t have one without the other. So with that in mind, I spend a lot of time trying to focus on the positive or the light despite it all, because I feel where you put your energy and your focus can have such an impact on how you feel in the world. That said, I think it’s soo important to be honest and create space to feel the darkness, and I feel songs are the most magical vulnerable way to do that! But reminding yourself in the depths of darkness that there’s still light out there, even in the tiny things we so often gloss over like a smile from a stranger or a butterfly landing on a flower is such a powerful beautiful tool I really try to come back to as much as I can. <3

From “Kinda F*cked” to “Distance,” your lyrics feel like pages from a diary. How has your songwriting evolved emotionally as you’ve gained more recognition?

Aw I’m so glad the diary entry feeling comes across! <3 I can confirm most of the time they are quite literally straight out of whichever little journal i’m scribbling in that day hehe. I would say if anything it’s become more emotional haha. As I’ve been writing more in sessions and exploring the different parts of my brain collaborations draw out, I seem to be diving deeper and deeper into hyperspecific feelings and finding songs that capture them which I’ve been loving. I’ve also been loving exploring writing songs that really say something about the world, a lil more political - as so often they’re the songs that inspire me the most and i just think there is soo much in the magical power of music in that way, so i’m excited to be leaning into that more. At the end of the day though, Songwriting is also just always always the place i go to process something, it’s like a lil practice of coming home to myself and i hope no matter where my music takes me it’ll always feel like that at it’s core <3

Winning the Triple J Unearthed Bigsound 2025 competition is a huge milestone. How did that experience shape your perspective as an emerging independent artist?

It has been truly so special and exciting and I’m just soo grateful to the beautiful Triple J team for the opportunity and the support. Honestly the main thing I think i’ve really felt in myself is this deepening sense of belief in this artist project and what i have to say. I think it’s really given me this sense of realising hey, people are connecting with this thing i’m doing, and given me this really special sense of hey yknow what, i really can do this thing <33 and i’m so grateful for that. It’s honestly been so inspiring. I also really love to reflect - and it feels special to think how the little me who had always dreamt of following music would feel and to let myself feel proud how all the years of hard work and determination are starting to unfold into this magical lil journey <3

You’ve supported artists like Thelma Plum, Infinity Song, and Killing Heidi. What have those live experiences taught you about connecting with audiences?

Oh they were such beautiful shows and the fans were all so so sweet! Connecting with live audiences is like my favourite thing ever. It’s so awesome how every performance and crowd has a different energy, and i love that these different scenarios all brought different elements out of me and new ways to connect. For example, killing heidi was a more rock-centred crowd, and i actually had so much fun really leaning into the higher energy physical performance element to connect, which is now a tool I love to bring into my live shows regardless of the audience! Also the Thelma and Infinity song crowds were both so sweet and they really listened so intently, which is everything to me, being able to see the beautiful faces of the fans and sing straight from my heart to theirs!

Your upcoming single “Feather” blends Scandi-pop and Celtic folk influences. How did that unique sonic fusion come together, and what story does the song tell?

Oh I have always been SO inspired by both these genres. My mumma is Scottish and my dad norwegian so i have always been so entirely raised on music with that energy and it’s deeply influenced my love of music that lifts you up and fills you sonically! The likes of Loreena Mckennit and Sigur Ros and Aurora are artists that have shaped me as a human growing up, which naturally fed into the song and the production. Josh Beattie and Brian Butcher and I had so much fun leaning into the experimentalism of bringing the sonic world to life in this way. We did things like sing into bass drums and bow vibraphone to create that particularly Sigur Ros inspired sonic world in the outro.

Re. the song’s story, it really encapsulates that feeling of looking around and suddenly realising the weight someone had so heavily on your life (both positively at first and then negatively in loss) has lifted. It’s the cathartic liberation in letting go, all the while acknowledging the sweetness of the love that you let in first. It’s an anthem for you to find the lightness of closure.

Collaboration seems to play a big role in your music. What was it like working with Amela on “Feather”?

I ADORE collaborating. Like i said above i feel each connection just unravels another little angle into your brain and sense of musicality and i love love love how that feels. It’s also just so special to be able to create something you’re really proud of with someone, and it’s such a connecting process.

Working with Amela was just magic, this song flowed out of us so quickly and smoothly the first time we ever hung out. We just clicked, and approached the creation process from such a similar angle that it all just came so naturally. We spent the night drinking lots of tea and giggling lots, it was honestly such a fun magic little process. We chose to record the vocals simultaneously too in the same space together to capture that lovely connection in the harmony.

You’ve been championed across major radio stations like Triple J, Double J, and FBi. How does it feel seeing your music resonate with such a wide Australian audience?

It honestly means the world! I’m truly just such a massive music fan myself, so to be able to resonate with audiences in this way as an artist is something that means so much,. Everything i’d ever hope for in my songs is to create spaces where people feel held and understood and safe to feel their feelings BIG - so i’m so incredibly grateful for the radio support in helping to reach people in this way, and that people have been connecting with them!

As someone from the Bris/Byron Bay scene, how has your environment influenced the sound and atmosphere of your work?

The place I grew up has had a massive impact on who i am and what i create! My dad is a musician,  and he’s very much the reason i started writing. I was raised on the quintessential northern rivers community choirs and acoustic hall folk nights. They were always my safe space growing up, and they inspired that deep love of folk, community, singalongs (as i incorporate often into songs!) and that deep emotive musical connection that drives me. Also, my best friend and incredible artist ‘Vincent’ started writing at the same time as me, and i’ve always been so deeply inspired by her lyricism and melodies. Moving to Brisbane was massive as it’s where I branched out and built my own community as an adult. I met my whole team and some of my closest friends - band, manager, co-producer here - and it’s really where the Serendipiti world and sound has evolved into what it is. Also again in the name of community, the whole music scene is so very beautifully full of friends who i love - we all champion one anothers’ music and collaborate and it’s something really special.

With your debut EP on the horizon, what kind of emotional journey can listeners expect and what do you hope they take away from it?

I think it’s very much a journey. Every moment is a chapter, or a stage in a story. I really love exploring perspective, and the way it can evolve over time through the same story. I’ve set up the songs to really reflect the stages of this emotional journey. I hope that whichever stage of love or loss you may be in, that there will be something in there for you - a perspective or lens you feel the most reflected in looking out. I hope that it’s a safe space to feel through the feelings of each chapter. I’m excited to share more about the very concept of the EP too! <3

Ian | Founder of Recently Played

Hi! My name is Ian, and I run all things Recently Played! I believe in putting a face to a name, so please take this time to get to know me!

I started this publication because music has always been a guiding light throughout my life. No matter if I am on the verge of either success or sorrow, the answer is music. Either lifting me higher than I already was or grabbing my hand, directing me to the end of the tunnel, I always turn to music. I craved an environment to discuss all things accustomed to it!
