SPOTLIGHT: HUNTER AMAZING

Meet Hunter Amazing and tune into her brand new single “ONLY ONE”

What inspired the concept behind “Only One” and its cinematic tone?

The overall theme of this project revolves around the color red. To me, red represents passion, emotion, and the late-night hours when most of our music is created. That theme naturally guides our direction; it’s become our North Star. Because of that, the sound naturally evolved into something cinematic, dark, and emotionally charged. The dark R&B lane just felt like the most honest expression of that energy.

You sample Beyoncé’s Partition. What drew you to that sample, and how did you reinterpret it?

I’ve always admired Beyoncé, she embodies artistic excellence and the highest level of execution every time she releases something. While exploring her catalog, the moment I heard that iconic bassline from Partition, it instantly pulled me in. It carried a sense of nostalgia that felt perfect for the sound and mood we’re creating with this project. We wanted to honor that energy while making it completely our own.

How do you approach layering and production to create that ethereal, immersive quality?

My sound took years to shape because I wanted to create music that I personally wanted to hear, something different, something hypnotic. I started out producing in college, usually while high with my friends, and that shaped how I approach sound today. My music is meant to feel immersive and trance-like, as if you’re on a euphoric trip. The layering of my vocals adds the color, it deepens the experience and pulls you into the mood of the record.

How does your identity as a queer Black woman shape your storytelling and emotional expression?

My identity shapes everything about how I write and express love. Women-loving-women experiences are unique, they’re passionate, consuming, and deeply emotional, and I translate that directly into my music. As a woman making R&B for women, I know the balance between sensuality and softness, intensity and care. It’s romantic, but it’s real, and it captures the way we truly love each other.

How did you balance the moody and uptempo energy in this track with Cbbeatz?

We wanted “Only One” to be something you could hear late at night or while getting ready to go out, hypnotic but alive. We love making slow, intimate tracks, but it was important to expand our catalog and give listeners something they can move to while still keeping that moody, dark, and sensual undertone that defines our sound.

What other artists or genres influence your creative process?

Ginuwine was a major influence for this project. His debut, The Bachelor, took risks, it merged hip-hop and R&B in a darker, grittier way that no one else was doing at the time. That’s the same kind of path I’m on. I don’t fit the traditional mold of an R&B artist, my roots as a rapper still shape how I approach rhythm, structure, and storytelling. My artistry sits at that intersection of R&B emotion and hip-hop edge.

What emotions or visuals were running through your head while writing “Only One”?

I was thinking about every girl I’ve ever really liked, that moment when you just want her to feel the same way you do. The song walks that thin line between love, obsession, and devotion. It’s about that intense, intoxicating pull when two people want each other equally. Something that’s both beautiful and a little dangerous.

What was your dynamic like working with Cbbeatz on this record?

Our creative process is honestly spiritual. I’ll make a demo at home, bring it to Corey, and he’ll rework the beat in a way that elevates everything I imagined. From there, we record and just let it flow. We don’t overthink — we trust our instincts. Every time we work together, it feels effortless, like we’re channeling something beyond ourselves.

If you could place “Only One” in a movie or show, what kind of scene would it soundtrack?

It would definitely fit in Euphoria. That show’s cinematic, drug-induced, and emotionally heavy tone perfectly mirrors what I create. My music has that same hypnotic, carefully curated energy. It’s dark, sensual, and a little surreal, just like the visuals in that show.

What do you want listeners to feel after hearing “Only One”?

I want people to feel whatever emotion comes up for them. Ideally, it evokes passion, love, reflection, or longing. Love, especially between women, is layered and complex, and I want to capture that in sound. My hope is that listeners get lost in it; that it overwhelms them in the best way possible and reminds them of someone they can’t forget.

Hi! My name is Ian, and I run all things Recently Played! I believe in putting a face to a name, so please take this time to get to know me!

I started this publication because music has always been a guiding light throughout my life. No matter if I am on the verge of either success or sorrow, the answer is music. Either lifting me higher than I already was or grabbing my hand, directing me to the end of the tunnel, I always turn to music. I craved an environment to discuss all things accustomed to it!
